It's a well-needed break from all of the stress, Rukia thinks to herself, leaning to the side and grinning cheekily up at Ichigo as she carefully supports herself with a hand on his knee. In spite of his protests, his cheeks are too red to claim that he isn't embarrassed, that he isn't somehow affected by her presence and her proximity.
And Rukia's always enjoyed worming into those impossible places, given her diminutive size.
There's more that she could easily attach to this conversation. Unspoken words that they don't really need to share with one another to know. That were they still back home, there's no way that they'd be in a situation like this, a slow evening spent together at a kitchen table, fooling over a piece of cake and its icing. But Rukia forces it out of her mind, if only because thinking too much has her going in circles. Feeling ever more trapped in a way that Rukia just doesn't want to deal with.
So instead, she grins. Teases, voice dropping lower. "Oooh," she croons, leaning closer. "Kurosaki-kun, what's the matter? Such a big boy to be afraid of a little spit." She sticks her tongue out for emphasis, leaning as though threatening to lick his cheek.
